Warehouse Shades in New Garage Mahal Hot Rod Episode

Warehouse Shades in New Garage Mahal Hot Rod Episode

To see our Barn Light Warehouse Pendants on national television, tune in or set your DVR’s for tomorrow night’s episode of Garage Mahal! Garage Mahal is a design show that transforms everyday, cluttered garages into remarkable work stations. Hot Rod Magazine will be featured on DIY Network Friday, December 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET. In this episode, host Bill Goldberg and his team update Hot Rod Magazine‘s multi bay tech garage.
Car enthusiasts and mechanics alike will be blown away by all of the polished chrome decor and memorabilia commemorating over 60+ years of muscle car history. A VIP lounge area is the focal point of the garage, where four cord hung, galvanized metal warehouse pendants hang over the bar counter. Warehouse pendants like the ones pictured above start at $99 and are available in shade sizes ranging from 12″ to 27″, with dozens of different finishes to chose from. A galvanized metal finish on the shades was chosen to complement the galvanized sheet metal, chrome rimmed bar stools, natural woods and other classic elements. These industrial themes gained popularity around the late 1940′s and early 1950′s, when America’s fascination with muscle cars began. Their cord hung mounting option allowed the design team to quickly install the warehouse pendants at a specific desired height above the bar area. If you’re unsure of your ceiling height, or have changed your mind on the final mounting height, all cord hung pendants from Barn Light Electric® offer this great adjustable feature!
Hot Rod Magazine published its first issue in 1948, and since the first issue, the publication has emerged as leading source for the latest tricks, tips, and tools needed for tweaking auto performance and appearance. As a tribute to the Hot Rod’s rich history, the lounge’s bar top is lined with covers of various issues from the past six decades.
Barn Light Electric® has supplied light fixtures for several episodes of Garage Mahal, including the Ultimate Home Gym with Modern Wall Sconces, Warehouse Shades for Hot Rod Magazine’s multi bay garage, and Deep Bowl Pendants for Jay Leno’s garage.

The Comanche Gooseneck Barn Light

One of the most unique warehouse shades sold at Barn Light Electric® is The Comanche Barn Light.
Distinct features on The Comanche include a semi-open neck that spreads additional light across the lower shade. These decorative features are combined with a classic flared shade for a style that resembles popular forms of the 20th century with nontraditional, simplified lines. The result is an appearance versatile enough to accent both historic or modern design. Ideal locations to install the Comanche include high traffic, exterior spaces such as porches and walkways. Similar coordinating wall sconces that can be paired with this gooseneck light include the Wall Mount Sharp Sconce, which shares the semi-open shade design and jelly jar glass unit.
The flared shade opens at the base to reveal the center of the light. Here, you will find a clear glass jelly jar that is placed over the light bulb. This serves as both a decorative feature, and acts as added protection for the enclosed light bulb. Other popular glass jelly jar choices include frost or rib. These styles will provide a soft, welcoming glow to greet evening guests or visitors!
Boasting 9 shade sizes, 38 different gooseneck arms, and 40 finishes, The Comanche is a true comprehensive light fixture that would compliment any Victorian, Historic & Colonial Revival, and Arts & Crafts home. There are a lot of possible combinations available for customizing the appearance of this classic barn light! Rustic and traditional finishes such as rosewood or galvanized metal are ideal choices for a vintage industrial or cabin setting. If you’re searching for a contemporary look, consider or trans red or trans yellow. Specialty finishes include chrome, burnt steel or burnt copper.

Gooseneck Light of the Week: Old Dixie Barn Light

Winter has only just begun, yet for many Americans in the Midwest and New England, the harsh climate has already arrived in full force. These extreme conditions reveal the remarkable strength of gooseneck lights from Barn Light Electric®. Our classic barn lights are built with top quality materials that can withstand the extremes of so many climates. From the wear and tear of deep freezes and blizzards, to the hot sands and sun of the South, today, we’ll reveal the top durable qualities that make up our Old Dixie.
This durable, all weather gooseneck is the Old Dixie Barn Light. It utilizes the basic shade styles and gooseneck arms found around the 1930′s within warehouses, factories, and farm houses. It starts at only $218 and is available in four shade sizes ranging from 11″-17″. To customize the Old Dixie to your preference, 37 different lengths of gooseneck arms are available and 40+ finishes. Do the math, and that’s over 6,000 different combinations that you can create with this barn light!
In 2009, an Old Dixie was installed on the exterior of a classic 109-year-old New Englander barn. Unlike competitors or big box stores whose lights may lose their finish after one winter, our American made fixtures are hand spun using the most durable materials on the market today. Place any of our quality gooseneck barn lights on the exterior of your home knowing they’ll last for years to come!
The Old Dixie pictured on the left was customized in a Dark Green powder coat finish and mounted using an HL-H Gooseneck Arm. In the summer, the dark green contrasts with the barn’s bold red facade and white trim to assist in restoring a classic, original appearance. In addition to the visual enhancement from the powder coat finish, it also provides extra durability to ensure that this light’s classic charm will be around for years to come.
Old Dixie Barn Lights are just as prevalent in the southern part of the country too. Pictured at the top of the page, the distinct shape of the warehouse shade makes it a popular choice for multi-purpose lighting. A customer from central Florida submitted a photo that showcases a 17″, white Old Dixie that was installed on a traditional stucco home. As an added bonus to the shade’s elegant design, a cast guard and glass unit was installed to encase the light bulb.

The Difference Between Stem Mount & Cord Hung Barn Lights

This week at Barn Light Electric® we continue our series about common customer questions. Some of our most popular barn pendants have the option of being stem mounted or cord hung, which leads many customers to ask:
“What is the difference between stem mount and cord hung lights?”
Cord hung pendants offer flexibility and versatility before, during and after installation, while stem mounts are better suited for long-term, fixed settings. Depending on the spacing and unique needs of your project, you’ll find an advantages in both mounting styles!
Many cord hung pendants come in various lengths, ranging from two to eight feet. Some classic barn lights, such as the Barn Light Warehouse Pendant, will arrive with seven feet of adjustable black or white cord (your choice on the color). The longer lengths allow each light to be easily adjusted to meet your desired height specs before, during, and after installation. Other cloth cord pendants, such as the Ivanhoe™ Industrial Porcelain Pendant, are featured online with two feet of vintage style cloth cord, so be sure to select longer lengths if needed. A special note to remember when customizing this style of lighting is the location of use. Most of these pendants are for indoor use only. All exterior rated cord hung pendants can be found within our porcelain enamel pendants.
A stem mount light fixture, as defined by our Glossary, notes that this mounting option uses a metal pipe to hang a light fixture from the ceiling. This metal pipe houses all electrical wiring that runs from the socket up to the electrical box. Because of this, a stem-mounted fixture can be used indoors or outdoors where it may get wet from snow or rain. A perfect example of this is the barn pendant shown on the right. To provide a unique alternative to traditional front porch lighting, it has been stem mounted and paired with a cast guard and glass jelly jar. Like we noted above, this mounting option is more for set locations – where they will be in one location for a long period of time (such as the front porch). Like the cord hung pendants above, stem mounts are available in numerous lengths, but cannot be as easily adjusted on site. Be sure to measure accurately before purchasing, however, should longer lengths be needed, they can always be ordered from our Lighting Hardware section online.
As you compare the mounting options, you should consider the location and the setting of the light. For example, if you’re installing the light in a living room, game room, or an area where the furniture moves frequently, a cord hung light can adjust with your space. However, if you’re installing the light over a kitchen island, on the front porch or within a commercial warehouse, a stem mount may be the best choice. Nautical Barn Lanterns for Farmhouses

Earlier this week, the Avalon Barn Lantern was referenced on one the nation’s most followed design blogs: Remodelista. A nautical-styled barn lantern is seen in the photo above, which was shot at Swan Fish Camp in Minnesota. This 2,000 square foot cabin sits on the bank of Lake Mille Lacs and offers panoramic views of the lake with high efficiency windows and sliding glass doors. It may be cold out now, but come spring and summer, this Minnesota lodge will come alive as a warm, lakeside weekend retreat. Remodelista highly recommended the Avalon as it shares many of the original lantern’s rustic features. Plus, because it can be customized in numerous finish styles, this nautical barn lantern can make the perfect match for the interior of any industrial farmhouse style fishing refuge. The Avalon Barn Lantern is just one of many nautically-themed barn lanterns sold at Barn Light Electric®.
Another similar barn lantern choice is the Barn Light Wall Mount Hamner Sconce, which is based on a vintage brass ship lantern from the early 1900′s. The Hamner’s unique stance includes a tall and decorative top that is positioned above the rolled glass enclosure.

Complete with traditional maritime elements, the Hamner Sconce breathes new life into the classic designs of maritime lanterns from the past thanks to modern refinement with a large selection of premium finishes and metals. The silhouette of this vintage reproduction beckons back to the turn of the 20th century, when mariners relied on the Hamner’s shape to reduce the amount of swaying caused by turbulent seas.
Following this uncharacteristically balanced design, the Hamner boasts an ideal weight ratio that is perfectly suited to withstand the harsh weather conditions of strong winds and salty ocean water. Take advantage of the function and style that this wall mounted barn lantern exudes, with a long list of premium finishes and your choice of glass, the Hamner Sconce is sure to give that look of authenticity to your interior or exterior nautical project.
Other nautical style barn lanterns at Barn Light Electric® include the Barn Light Wall Mount Walton Sconce and the Bridgewater Barn Lantern. For more information about these lights, visit barnlightelectric.com.

American Made Porcelain Enamel Lights

In recognition of National Made in America Month, Barn Light Electric® invites you to browse its selection of American made porcelain enamel barn lights. These vintage inspired lighting fixtures are manufactured utilizing raw steel and an exterior glass coating; two of the same top quality components which made the first RLM warehouse lights exceptionally durable.
The industrial look of the porcelain pendant is based on the original models from the early 1900′s, when Goodrich™ produced the original Gooseneck RLM Warehouse Shades for agricultural and industrial use. Today, these pendants are commonly used in living rooms and kitchens of homes across the country. Regardless of which fixture you choose, you’ll find a variety of both modern and traditional porcelain enamel finishes to match your home. The most popular porcelain barn lights in our collection include the 12″ Goodrich Dino Porcelain Gooseneck Light and the Ivanhoe™ Sinclair Industrial Porcelain Pendant.
Versatility defines the Goodrich™ Dino, which the  comes ready to install and ready to withstand years of use, just like the original Goodrich™ Gooseneck Lights. The 12″ Dino shade comes in a variety of color options with your choice of three vintage style cotton twist cord options: Black, Brown or Putty. The 8″ shade comes standard with a 5″ round porcelain ceiling canopy and 24″ of replica cotton twist cord (additional lengths available). Dino shades can be used alone or paired together for lighting larger areas, such as a kitchen island, or dining room table. Realsimple.com featured the Dino on a  blog post about a cluttered laundry room that was transformed into an organized workspace.
As homeowners and business owners have discovered, porcelain pendants add a special touch the surrounding atmosphere that’s truly one of a kind. A perfect example is at Dinosaur BBQ in Troy, New York, where a line of 10 Ivanhoe™ Sinclair Industrial Porcelain Pendants hang above the bar in the center of the restaurant. The vintage green finish on the pendants blend with the thick reclaimed wood and local art relics lining the walls. Distinct features on this pendant – like solid brass sockets and vintage style paddle switches, add to the rustic roadhouse theme of the restaurant.
Our porcelain barn lights continue to gain popularity because they’re easy to clean and they retain their value over time. Porcelain enamel is the one finish that will retain its original color, so you’re investing in an American made product that is sustainable and reliable enough to withstand the test of time!

Barn Light Saddlebred Pendants for Kitchen Renovation

In a recent post on Apartment Therapy design blog, a homeowner in the midst of a big project sought some advice for their kitchen renovation project.
Now we are at the fun part – picking out all the finishing touches. It is a beach cottage style theme and I am wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of lighting for over our island that has the same feel as the pendants in this picture?
Judging from the responses, fans of Barn Light Electric® are good matchmakers! Readers suggested two different barn pendants that closely resemble the homeowner’s desired choices: the Barn Light Saddlebred Pendant and the Barn Light Warrior Pendant. The Saddlebred’s shade design resembles that of a Deep Bowl Pendant. Its stacked neck design adds a bit of detail to each piece, while the narrow shade below provides a directional beam of light for surfaces below. For mounting options, this pendant can be hung with up to 7 feet of cord or stem mounted. It starts at just $115 each and is available in more than 50 different finishes to accommodate the colors of the surrounding walls and decor. To get the look above, select Satin Steel with an additional wire guard for $30. Three shade sizes are available (8″, 10″ and 12″), making this modern barn pendant the perfect addition to a kitchen island.

Another barn pendant commonly used over kitchen islands and dining tables is the Barn Light Warrior Pendant, which starts at $175. The Warrior’s design is based on classic western elements from the Railroad Era and the Industrial movement. With the ability to stand out from the rest, this design boasts an elegantly spun neck that widens out to create the shade. It is available in 12″ and 14″ size and more than fifty different finishes are available to choose from. The Warrior pendant pictured to the right is in a galvanized metal finish and acorn glass with a wire guard can be selected to achieve both a modern and rustic look.

Difference Between Clear, Frosted & Ribbed Glass Jelly Jars

In addition to last week’s post titled The Difference Between Wire Guards & Cast Guards, another common question we receive from our customers refers to our glass jelly jars.
“The light fixture I’m wishing to order has the option for a guard and glass. What is the difference between clear, frosted, and
ribbed glass jelly jars?”
With many of our barn lights, whether a gooseneck, pendant or wall sconce, you have the option to add accessories like wire guards, cast guards or glass jelly jars. Not only do these unique accessories add character and become focal points on each piece, but they also serve a purpose – as glass jelly jars provide extra protection for the inner light bulb. The three most popular styles, we will discuss today: Clear, Rib, and Frost.
By choosing clear glass, you’re able to see the inner light bulb through the translucent glass. Some may prefer this look when choosing Nostalgic Edison Style Light Bulbs as it will show off the bulb’s unique design, while customers who wish to use energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs might want to opt for a more concealing glass choice to hide the odd shape and color of the bulb. Clear glass also allows the maximum amount of light to escape out to accent the interior or exterior of your home and business.
Frosted glass jelly jars have a ‘frost’ like coating placed on the interior of each jar. When the barn light is turned on, this thin coating softens the escaping light, ultimately allowing a relaxing glow to fan outward. This style is an ideal choice for those who wish to hide ugly inner light bulbs. Consider selecting the frosted glass option when placing stem mount or cord hung pendants above kitchen and dining room tables.

Lastly, is our rib glass option. While the outer jar remains smooth, the rib texture is found on the inside of the jelly jar – just like the frosted finish we discussed above. This style of glass still allows for a maximum amount of light to escape (more than the frosted), but the ribbed interior still aids in disguising the not so attractive bulb. Ribbed glass is an ideal choice to consider when placing on the front porch as it will give off a welcoming glow and still provide maximum light.
Don’t forget! For those who want to bring in additional color, all Barn Light Electric® jelly jar glasses are also available in multiple color choices! These include, Amber Crackle, Blue, Green, Red, and Amber. Customize your unique fixture today!

Porcelain Enamel Barn Lighting at Dinosaur BBQ

A New York favorite, Dinosaur BBQ, recently opened its fourth restaurant within the Empire State. The new establishment is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in Troy, New York. Above the full service liquor bar in the center of the restaurant, you’ll see our very own Barn Light Electric Ivanhoe™ Sinclair Industrial Porcelain Pendants.
A solid brass socket and vintage style paddle switch are two of distinct features on the Ivanhoe™ Sinclair Industrial Porcelain Pendant. The industrial look of the porcelain pendant is based on the original models from the early 1900′s, and made a perfect match for Dinosaur BBQ’s rustic saloon feel. The roadhouse-style layout features thick reclaimed wood lined with local art relics and rustic decorations.
These porcelain barn lights pay tribute to their original counterparts originally used as task lighting around the 1930′s. Their vintage green finish brings out a pub-style atmosphere and welcomes guests for a great dining experience!
Dinosaur’s nationally acclaimed food has received honors from Men’s Health and Eating Well magazine. Dinosaur was rated the nation’s No.1 BBQ restaurant by “Good Morning America” and was featured on the Food Network and Travel Channel. Their cookbook, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que: An American Roadhouse, was voted a best BBQ cookbook by the National Association of BBQ.
Dinosaur BBQ’s founder, John Stage, began Dinosaur Bar-B-Que with two partners as a mobile concession unit in 1983 at a Harley Davidson biker event. Five years later, he opened the first Dinosaur restaurant in Syracuse, NY. It expanded to Rochester in 1998, Harlem in 2004 and the Troy location opened this November. Since day one, Stage and his staff have kept a strong commitment to delivering high quality food with great service in an entertaining and unique atmosphere.
Other restaurants that utilized these vintage inspired industrial pendants, include the Modern Coffee Shop in Oakland, California.
The tremendous photographs shown today were shot by Paul Grupp, a professional photographer at Upstate Photographers in Troy, New York.

Galvanized Pendants Provide a Rustic Look in Log Homes

Log cabins are a favorite retreat during the winter months. For many log cabin owners, distinct touches and rustic decorations like galvanized metal pendant lights play a major role in the process of creating a warm and comfortable environment for family and guests to enjoy.
A perfect example of a rustic fixture enhancing a log cabin home is the washtub style chandeliers hanging over this Grand Rapids, Michigan table. The washtubs above the walnut table and hickory chairs is very similar to the Sports Bar 2 Bucket Light sold in the Restaurant Lighting section at Barn Light Electric®. The Sports Bar 2 Bucket Light starts at $204and available in 35 different finishes. It measures at 22 inches long by 7 inches high and 13 inches wide. It comes with two hanging options: 8 feet of cord or 3 feet of chain.
Another pendant similar to the Washtub Chandelier is the 21″ Sports Bar Bucket Pendant. This pendant starts at $183 with a glass guard upgrade available. It measures 10 inches high and 21 inches wide with 8 feet of cord or 3 feet of chain for hanging options. If you’re planning to install the Sports Bar Bucket Pendant for commercial use, you can add a custom logo to the shade’s exterior or customize it further with a coordinating color scheme.
Speaking of sports bars, check out the main floor of this Colorado Timber Barn. The inside features a central dining area reminiscent of a sports bar, with two long counters in the center of the living room. Notice the rustic lighting hanging above the counter tops – it resembles of our Barn Pendants, the Barn Holophane Pendant. The Holophane Pendant is available in more than 50 different finishes, including galvanized metal and a similar rustic Rosewood finish shown above. Depending on your counter or table widths, shade sizes can be ordered in 8 to 24 inches.
